Flooring calculator and floor covering tools

A flooring estimate is the room's area plus the maker's cutting allowance, divided by what one pack covers, then rounded up to whole packs. Pergo, for example, tells buyers to add 10% for a straight lay and 15% on a diagonal. One square foot is 0.09290304 m², so the same method works in metres. Enter your room below for the area with the extra included, then use the matching floor calculator for packs.

Formula and assumptions
  • Rectangles (one to three): Area = length 1 × width 1 + length 2 × width 2 + length 3 × width 3
  • L-shaped room: Area = overall length × overall width − missing corner length × missing corner width
  • Triangle: Area = base × height ÷ 2
  • Circle, half or quarter circle: Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × 1, ½ or ¼
  • Square yards = square feet ÷ 9; square metres = square feet × 0.09290304; metric: Square feet = m² ÷ 0.09290304; square yards = m² ÷ 0.83612736
  • Split L-shaped and irregular rooms into rectangles (and triangles), measure each and add the areas.
  • Area of a triangle is base times perpendicular height divided by two.
  • Inches are divided by 12 and centimetres by 100 before multiplying, so 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft.
  • One square foot is 0.09290304 m² and one square yard is 0.83612736 m², which makes a square yard 9 square feet.
  • Areas are not rounded until they are shown.

How do I go from square feet to boxes of flooring?

Work in three steps, and keep them apart. First find the floor area. Split L-shaped and irregular rooms into rectangles (and triangles), measure each and add the areas. Include doorways, alcoves, bay windows and any adjoining area getting the same floor. The calculator above does this part and adds a percentage on top, so the figure it returns is the area to buy for, not the area of the room.

Second, choose the allowance from the maker of the product you are buying, not from a rule of thumb. Allowances differ between materials and between layouts, and the table further down shows who states which figure. Third, divide by the coverage printed on the pack and round up. Flooring is sold in packs with a stated coverage; divide area plus allowance by pack coverage and round up. Pack sizes are not round numbers: Shaw Floorte PRO Paragon 7 in Plus LVP (7 x 48 in) covers 18.91 sq ft (1.757 m2) per carton. Pergo TimberCraft + CleanProtect laminate (7.49 x 47.28 in planks, 10 mm) covers 22.09 sq ft (2.05 m2) per carton. Dividing by a guessed figure such as a neat twenty square feet is one of the most common reasons an order comes up a pack short.

The dedicated calculators for each floor type do the third step for you and add the extras that type needs, such as underlayment rolls, grout or seams. The measuring irregular rooms for flooring guide covers the tape-measure part in detail.

How much extra flooring do manufacturers say to buy?

Each maker states its own figure, and they are not interchangeable. Laminate and vinyl plank sit close together: Pergo's figures appear above, and Daltile gives the same pair for its plank, 10% straight and 15% diagonal. Hardwood runs lower on a straight lay. Mullican Flooring's worked rule adds 5-7% for a standard (straight) hardwood install. Tile runs higher, and the figure depends on who you ask. Fireclay Tile recommends ordering 15% extra for field tile such as subway tile. Daltile recommends buying about 10% more tile than the measured area needs.

A common belief is that ten percent extra suits every floor. It is close for laminate on a straight lay, too much for many hardwood jobs and too little for patterned tile. The waste allowance explainer sets out why the figures differ. Whatever you choose, keep a spare carton or two. Mullican suggests buying 1-2 extra cartons to keep for future repairs. Batches and colours change, so a matching board or tile may be impossible to find later.

Why does each floor type need its own calculator?

Because the unit you buy changes. Click laminate, plank vinyl and wood come in cartons of a fixed area, so the count is area divided by carton coverage. Bruce Dundee solid oak (3/4 x 3-1/4 in) covers 22 sq ft (2.04 m2) per carton. Kährs Oak Nouveau engineered boards (15 x 187 x 2420 mm) come 2.72 m2 (29.3 sq ft) to a pack. Quick-Step Impressive laminate (1380 x 190 x 8 mm planks) comes 7 planks and 1.835 m2 (19.75 sq ft) to a pack.

Tile also comes in boxes, but the area per box differs by size and range. Box coverage differs by product and size, so use the coverage printed on the box or data sheet. A box of Marazzi Plaster 60 x 60 cm tile covers 1.08 m² (11.6 sq ft). Tile needs setting materials as well, which is why the tile calculator also returns thinset and grout.

Carpet and sheet vinyl are cut from rolls, so what matters is roll width and how many strips the room needs, not the area alone. Most carpet is made in 12 ft (3.66 m) wide rolls. Some carpet is also made in 15 ft (4.57 m) wide rolls. UK carpet makers sell broadloom in 4 m (13 ft 1 in) widths. UK carpet makers also sell broadloom in 5 m (16 ft 5 in) widths. Tarkett makes sheet vinyl in 4 m wide rolls (about 22 m long). The installer also needs trimming margin. CRI 105: cut carpet to the seaming diagram with at least 3 in (7.6 cm) extra at each wall for trimming, plus any pattern-match allowance. A room slightly wider than the roll can need a whole extra strip, which is why a carpet order often shows far more square yards than the floor measures. For a side-by-side view of every material, see flooring types compared.

How much flooring does a typical home have?

New US houses have been getting smaller, which matters if you are pricing a whole-house floor. The median new single-family home completed in the US in 2025 had 2,142 square feet of floor area, down from 2,146 in 2024 and a 2015 peak of 2,467, according to the Census Bureau's Characteristics of New Housing. The average new single-family home completed in the US in 2025 had 2,378 square feet, ranging from 2,240 in the Midwest to 2,644 in the Northeast (Census Bureau, Characteristics of New Housing). Those figures are total finished floor area of newly completed single-family homes, not the area of any one floor covering, since kitchens, baths and living rooms rarely share one material.

Flooring is also one of the most common jobs on existing homes. About 5.47 million US homeowners reported carpeting, flooring, paneling or ceiling-tile projects in 2023, totalling about $25.0 billion (Harvard JCHS Table A-1, 2023 AHS). That category in the American Housing Survey groups carpet, hard flooring, paneling and ceiling tile, so it is a count of projects of that kind, not of floors laid. The home improvement project counts page has the wider series.

Over-ordering has a cost beyond the receipt. The how much building material ends up in landfill page lists debris by material, and the how much material prices have risen since 2020 page shows how producer prices have moved, which helps when an estimate made last year needs updating.

Where do flooring calculators stop?

They count material for a flat, prepared floor. They do not check whether the subfloor is level, dry or stiff enough, and those checks often decide what else you buy. Wood is the clearest case: NWFA: some manufacturers do not require acclimation; follow the flooring maker's instructions and MC readings, not a fixed day count.

Floating floors need room to move. Pergo and Shaw laminate instructions call for a 1/4 in (6 mm) or 3/8 in (10 mm) perimeter expansion space, depending on the product. Quick-Step laminate needs an 8-10 mm expansion joint on all sides. Large open areas may need a break with a transition strip, which changes trim, not packs. Shaw laminate: a room wider than 26 ft (part of the 26 x 40 ft limit) needs a T-molding expansion break. Shaw laminate: a run longer than 40 ft (part of the 26 x 40 ft limit) needs a T-molding expansion break.

Stairs, curved walls and borders need separate counts, because their waste is far higher than in an open room and no maker publishes a single figure for them. Measure them on their own and add the result to the room total.

For the sources behind each number, read how the calculators work. Walls are next door: the calculators for interior walls cover paint, plasterboard, brick and wallpaper. Tile sizes and their metric equivalents are on the standard tile sizes chart, and the measuring a room for tile guide covers showers and splashbacks.

Flooring calculator questions

Why don't flooring cartons cover a round number of square feet?

The carton holds a whole number of planks, so its area is the plank size times the plank count, which is rarely round. Shaw Floorte PRO Paragon 7 in Plus LVP (7 x 48 in) covers 18.91 sq ft (1.757 m2) per carton. Always divide by the figure printed on the carton you buy.

Can I use one square footage figure for a whole floor with several materials?

No. Measure each area that gets a different material separately, because each one has its own allowance and pack size. Then add the results only within the same product.

What width are carpet and sheet vinyl rolls in Europe?

UK carpet makers sell broadloom in 4 m (13 ft 1 in) widths. UK carpet makers also sell broadloom in 5 m (16 ft 5 in) widths. For sheet vinyl, Tarkett makes sheet vinyl in 2 m wide rolls (about 25 m long). Wider and narrower rolls in the same range change how many seams the room needs.

Do I need a plastic sheet under laminate on a concrete floor?

Usually, unless your underlayment already includes a barrier. Pergo: over concrete use 6-mil (0.15 mm) virgin polyethylene, overlapping edges 8 in, unless the underlayment has one built in. Check your product's installation guide for its own rule.
